Digital Nonfiction
This course was not what I expected. My expectations were more nonfiction writing that would be delivered digitally. Instead, I learned more about composing nonfiction writing using images, sound and text rather than text only. In the course I read a variety of texts related to the “big ideas” of nonfiction writing and nonfiction example texts such as “Ode to Me,” by Maya Klein. My reflection on that piece became a text peppered with video memes, recorded sounds and pictures that expressed my thoughts on the piece which I presented visually instead of using only text. Through a collaborative project, I completed a multimedia presentation on “representation” as it relates to digital nonfiction. Both are included here as examples of my work.
As I read and reflected on the “big ideas” of digital nonfiction, I was at the same time creating a final digital nonfiction piece. The process included gathering materials and artifacts and learning the necessary technology, writing scripts and designing storyboards. At the end, the finished product which is included here, “One Summer of Baseball,” became one of my favorite graduate projects. The video documents one summer of my father’s life and remains an emotional piece for me and my family. Digital Nonfiction developed my expertise in analyzing rhetorical situations and using appropriate strategies and further developed my ability to deliver texts using a variety of methods.
